Why I play Warcraft Dec. 9th, 2009 @ 01:06 am

warning: I go loregeek in this post.

When the preview trailer for a patch can give me chills they must be doing something right.

I suppose much of the effect is lost for those of you who didn't play WC2 or WC3, but that's his father talking, whom Arthas killed in WC3 in what is one of the most poignant cinematics in Warcraft history. This patch wraps up the chapter of the WC story which started back in Warcraft 3, with Arthas finding Frostmourne and later merging with Ner'zhul to become the Lich King. Conquering Icecrown Citadel and confronting Arthas is basically the biggest moment in Warcraft since the Dark Portal was opened to let the orcs into Azeroth, starting the whole series.

But aside from the lore, this patch also brings along some of the most fun I've ever had playing pve so far.

We've only completed two of the three dungeons today, which were amazing. One section involved fighting through a collapsing cavern of snow, having to avoid the falling ice blocks while fighting your way through, and one of the endbosses was a floating head with three faces, and the faces do nasty things to do depending on which face is.. facing.. you. And after all the dungeons comes the real stuff - the five wings of the raid to attempt. I'm really looking forward to the reverse boss fight - instead of killing a boss, you have to heal a powerful ally back up to full health while fighting many waves of monsters. Finally, a place for the support classes to shine! Those of you who like your pve served up with heaps of challenge and fun can look me up on Steamwheedle Cartel. No gear requirements necessary to join (because needing gear to play is an absolute and utter myth perpetrated by those who like to think Warcraft requires a lot of gear grind - Yogg Saron can be beat with blue items ffs. You don't need gear, you need skill).
